Turning Obstacles into Opportunities

Getting Rejected by Squarespace

June 2nd I applied to be a Speaker at Squarespace’s Circle Day—a day of networking and discovery with Sqaurespace’s most innovative creators & entrepreneurs. I attended the event virtually last year & loved how informative the sessions were. Once I saw the email invite to apply as a Speaker, I immediately knew I wanted to explain the key factor to finding your niche is to explore & find yourself. I won’t include my entire submission here. When I received the email response four weeks later, I asked for feedback, which was:

We received quite a few pitches about finding a niche, and we were particularly looking for ones that provided clear guidance on how those attending the workshop could leave the event and clearly identify their own niche. While we encourage attendees to share their stories, my feedback would be to balance sharing how you learned about the importance of a topic with clear actionable guidance.”

For starters, I was excited to receive feedback because many other companies might have disregarded my request or just said, “It’s a no sis” (lol). While I don’t fully agree with the feedback & think the majority won’t actually know their niche as they leave the event, I am taking my submission & the feedback to create an eBook. I did quite a bit of research about niche finding but no one ever stated what actually happens during the process. As clear & concise as my niche is now, trust me when I say it wasn't always easy & I want to emphasize that. As a Model, I initially confined my content to fashion-related topics. I was actually a bit hesitant to explore different avenues, fearing it would steer me away from modeling...which I believed should have been my sole focus. However, one day as I was meditating, the realization struck me like a bright light: modeling extends far beyond fashion, it was about me & what I wanted to portray.

So whether you are here because you need to find your niche or wondering how the hell to turn a no into a yes, start with internalizing who you are & why you’re pursuing your goals. Make sure you understand your purpose & intentions, once you have those, the “no’s” won’t hold you back.
